Derek Wintle

Derek Wintle

Full Name: Derek Ivo Wintle

Nickname: Dexter

Born: 1 July 1967, London, England

Batting Style: Right Hand Bat

Bowling Style: Occasionally on the Pitch

Location: Pokfulam

Occupation: Supervisory Analyst

Interests (outside cricket): Hanging out with the family, reading, music, walking

Previous Cricketing Experience:
North Sydney 4th Grade Juniors (personal best (moment): Seeing a bowler decide that for one over he would appeal on every ball, regardless of what happened. He went ahead with his plan, which cracked everyone up. The umpire sent him off.); Sydney Grammar School (personal best: We were the easybeats of the comp, so I can’t remember too many PBs, but I do recall a partnership of 150 once, my contribution being 70-odd).

Reason(s) for joining Lamma CC: I lived there from 1996 to 2000. When I was at the Sixes in 1996 I saw the “ad” for LCC on the main scoreboard and thought, “I fancy a bit of that.” Hadn’t played for 12 years at that stage (and it showed).

Best and/or worst cricketing memories: Best: 1) Seeing Allan Border’s test debut at the MCG, 1978–79. He barely scored any runs but it was the start of something very special. 2) Watching Sachin Tendulkar in full flight (e.g. taking on Shoaib in a game in the last World Cup). 3) Australia’s tie against South Africa in the World Cup before that. 4) Butt Hussain scoring a quickfire 90-odd at Mission Road, when we were chasing about 110. 5) Brad’s century at KGV, many moons ago. 6) Monty’s 7-11 (I think) at KCC. 7) Daryl’s four wickets in four balls at Mission Road. I could go on. Worst: 1) Sarfraz Narwaz reducing Australia from 4-305 to all out 310, MCG, 1979. Australia’s highly improbable 4th-innings target of 382 seemed well within grasp, till Sarfraz mowed us down. He ended up with 9-86. 2) My “over without an end” during a Summer Eights game. 3) Every time Lamma have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
